Makiki sits in central Honolulu, between the urban core and the green slopes of the Koʻolau foothills. Its tropical climate and mix of residential streets, apartment buildings, and small commercial strips give it a settled, city-neighborhood feel. Nearby outdoor escapes include the grassy grounds and walking paths of Thomas Square and the trails and overlooks of Tantalus; Makiki District Park adds recreation space and a playground. Local cafés, casual restaurants, and everyday shops line parts of the neighborhood, while downtown Honolulu’s galleries, theaters, and nightlife are a short trip away. The area’s history is reflected in nearby civic and cultural landmarks, including ʻIolani Palace and the Honolulu Museum of Art. Buses connect Makiki with downtown and other parts of Oʻahu, and walking or biking works well for some local errands. For the Makiki neighborhood, median rent is $1,899 per month, with a typical range of $675 to $5,950.
