This house was built by Thomas Redd, one of the very first European settlers to what is now known as the Charleroi Borough. This house and the entire surrounding property was all that existed in 1850, when the house was built. Mr. Redd was a farmer and businessman whose settlement roots led to a number of prominent, pioneering business people who eventually launched what is now the Charleroi Borough, founded in the late 1880's and early 1890's. In order to populate the area and develop what is now the downtown area (Route 88) corridors, Mr. Redd's massive farm property was eventually sold by his heirs and Charleroi's earliest surveyors were tasked with naming the streets and creating plots off of this farmland in which to build residential houses and commercial buildings, many of which still exist today. It all started with this man and this house. 104 Lincoln Avenue is not just a historical property. It is the very first one built on this side of the Monongahela River and its presence and contribution to the settlement of Charleroi is cemented in its history.
