The house at 1097 Marco Place is both private and open. This completely replaced structure is located on a 40' x 100' lot in the Venice heights neighborhood of Venice. The architect designed home is modern and unique. A sequence of light filled rooms and courtyards formed by the placement of a new two story volume at the rear of the property. The two buildings, are connected by the kitchen, a light well, and a stair. A wall of glass between the kitchen and the courtyard slides away, completely out of sight. The 2,050 sf home has three bedrooms and 2.5 baths. Another courtyard, private to the ground floor master bedroom, encloses a spa framed by a stand of black bamboo. A roof deck with an unobstructed 360* view is above the two upstairs bedrooms. The home is constructed in the the Southern California vernacular tradition of wood and stucco. The glass is in aluminum frames. A single piece of steel enables a double cantilever over a glass corner of the living room. This column is revealed, and is the only steel in the construction. Polished concrete floors are radiantly heated by the sun and a small Munchkin boiler. All of the woodwork is sapele, a sustainably harvested hardwood. Countertops are Caesarstone. The bathrooms are lined with commercial tile from Walkon. Sinks and water closets are by Duravit, tubs are by American Steel, and the faucets are by Dornbracht. Domestic hot water circulates continuously, providing hot water quickly to the tap. Kitchen appliances are by Miele.
