The story of Hale o Laka. Hale o Laka is a unique home. Named Laka in honor of the deity of the forest, the rain and the hula. i. Secluded property in the rainforest for its beauty, serenity and spiritual energy. Hale o Laka, is protected by the canopy of centuries-old towering lehua trees, sacred to the goddess Pele and her family. Hale o laka was designed to exist in harmony, with and within the rainforest. The house offers views of the surrounding forest. The sliding glass doors and French windows are re-purposed from an old school house destroyed by a hurricane on Kauai. Hand painted walls depict the hand woven and plaited walls, mats and garments throughout Polynesia. The hand painted open ceiling is reminiscent of Maori structures. The shell walls in the bathroom celebrates Laka‘s hand picked collection, which was incorporated into object d’art as well as traditional lei. The stain-glass window is an example of the beach glass art. The back room providing natural light in close proximity to the forest, served as a studio. The wood-burning stove which provided heat for Hale o Laka is from a cabin used by Queen Liliuokalani when she would visit Volcano. The bathtub on the front porch is from a home on Kauai’s north shore, belonging to Kamehameha IV. Hale o Laka has hosted many celebrated guests, hula masters and artists . Hale o Laka is a tribute to Hawaii’s culture, art, history and true spirit of Aloha.
