In 1925, my Grandfather James Edwin Yantis purchased 111 Vitra just off the 1500 block of South Presa. The area was much different back then than now. In 1917, Brackenridge High School was in the stages of being built, 20 years later my Dad, his Brother and Sister graduated from the school. St. Mary's street, South Alamo, and Perieda streets created a triangle from which houses in the neighborhood were built around 1865; with the neighborhood continuing south. My dad's brother told me that 111 Vitra had been a farm, and a large barn was on the property when my Grandfather, my Grandmother, and my Father moved onto the property in 1925. In the years to come, St. Mary's Street intersected with Roosevelt Avenue, and the Lone Star Brewery was built so a railroad overpass was built across St. Mary's for a railroad spur to serve the brewery. The original Roosevelt Street runs at the end of Vitra, parallel to St. Mary's; Roosevelt was then extended at Lone Star Blvd. adjacent to the park. In the 1930's, my Grandfather owned another house on Vitra, and one of my cousins was born in the house. The street was gravel, not paved with no streetlights or fences between the houses. After the neighborhoods expanded, the King William area was built, and the city expanded south toward the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas. San Antonio has a marvelous history filled with everything imageable that seems to be the heartbeat of the city. When I really think of my growing up next to my grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and buddies, it would take an epic novel to tell all the happiness, laughter, sadness, and closeness of families and neighbors.
