    What's special

Located in the very heart of Old Town Alexandria, this gracious two and a half story brick home with a Georgian facade has been a part of the history of Old Town for over two centuries. The land beneath it was originally owned by the Alexander family for whom Alexandria was named. St Asaph Street was named in honor of the Bishop of St. Asaph Cathedral in Wales, a friend of Alexander Hamilton and Benjamin Franklin and an early supporter of the American colonies. Built by Richard Ratcliffe in 1786, this historic home was owned briefly by Edmund Jennings Lee in the early 1800s. It is listed in "Historic Alexandria Virginia Street By Street" published in 1976. Currently configured as a mixed use property with two residential units and two units that have been used as offices, there is potential to repurpose the current use or reconfigure it as a single family home. Tucked behind the front house is a lovely private, sun lit walled garden and a detached garage. This unique home is comprised of four sections. The original portion is a two story "flounder house" built in 1786 and is signified by a single angle gable roof. These were typically built as the rear wing of a larger home to be built later on the front of the lot. The front house was built next in the late 1700s and is connected by a frame hyphen to the flounder, which was likely the original kitchen. The rear portion was built in 1935 and attaches to the west side of the flounder. At the rear of the property is a one car garage built in 1941 of used brick and is accessed by an alley off of Washington Street. The main house features classic architectural details and original wide plank heart pine flooring. The entry foyer leads to a gracious two room suite with 9 foot ceilings and tall windows overlooking St Asaph St with a powder room in the rear. The second floor two room suite has a wide sunlit front room and an ensuite full bath off of the back room. The third floor is a unique European style garret apartment with exposed brick walls, vaulted beamed ceilings, hand-crafted kitchen cabinets of heart pine from an old barn in Frederick, Md and a full bath. The charming flounder house sits behind the main house and features a wood paneled Living Room with a fireplace, a Dining Room and a compact kitchen, also with hand crafted kitchen cabinets. Upstairs is a Master Bedroom with a fireplace, beamed ceiling and a full wall of closets. Down the hall is a bright full bath with a skylight and a second bedroom with a built-in bed for an overnight guest or a cozy place to curl up with a good book. Outside is a lovely deep garden with camellias, redbuds and dogwoods which leads to the garage. Steps away from King St, this property is ideally located near shops, restaurants, cafes and many historic sites. A quick trip on the King St Trolley will take you to Metro and Alexandria's Union Station. An easy stroll down King Street will take you to the waterfront parks and the city dock where you can catch a water ferry to National Harbor, the MGM Casino, the Nationals Stadium the Georgetown waterfront.
