Hopwood is a village of a little over 2000 at the foot of the Laurel Highlands. The Old Speedway Inn is along Route 40, the Old National Highway. A supermarket opened in November. The pharmacy will be opening an ice cream store nearby. There are child care centers, veterinarian and animal boarding stores, hair salons, a Beacon moving agent, a laundromat, a saloon and bar, a bowling alley,..among the business. Somerset Bank and Dollar General have storefronts in town. A post office, several churches. and a gym are within walking distance. Karate lessons and Tie Quan Do are great entertainment for the kids. A lumber yard is across from the building, and Tim Gridle Insulation and Solar Panel company is three doors down. A construction business and large machinery rental also employ workers. There are 2 fast food restaurants in the village, but a nice dining place would be in order. Historic forts, two Frank Lloyd Houses (Falling Water and Kentucky Knob), many state parks and trails, as well as Seven Spring Ski Resort and Ohiopyle, are within driving distance. The history behind the name Old Speedway Inn, started with the the speedway across the street. Famous drivers like Chevrolet raced here in the early 1900s. The building was originally a 'fix-it' place for those autos. A big fire closed the track. But in the late 1930s, it became a minor league baseball field. The Old Speedway Inn housed the visiting team. In addition to the 12 second floor rooms, there are three baths (Renovated in the 60s, there are 4 kitchens on the second floor currently) The first floor of the property is refurbished with the original oak woodwork. A restaurant, including an old bandstand was frequented in the 1940s. Three rest rooms are on the first floor as well. It was a time when women needed to be escorted in eating places. (So when World War II came and the men left, the restaurant closed down.) The first floor is painted and carpeted, ready for business. Six new breaker boxes are installed. The parking lot can accommodate tour buses or recreational vehicles. Miniature golf would be a great addition to the putting field nearby. The property also includes a three bedroom, two bath apartment over a two car garage. Originally this was the hoochie-koochie house for the ball team.
