Continue reading to learn about the history of The Dawkins House. The Last Confederate State House The Dawkin's house or The Shrubs was the Provisional state Capitol of SC at the end of the war between the states. It graces the University of South Carolina campus in Union It is a true historic Federal style treasure. Description It was February of 1865 - an army led by Gen. William T. Sherman was closing in on Columbia and soon would set fire to South Carolina's capitol city. Governor Andrew Gordon McGrath, making the decision to flee, contacted an old college friend, legislator and judge Thomas N. Dawkins, and they discussed moving the capitol to Union, South Carolina. Sometime around Feb. 15, two days before Columbia went up in flames, the center of government with its records, office holders and supporting workers, started its move to Union, Governor Magrath used the library of the Dawkins House as his office and awaited news from dispatches who reported General Sherman's movements around the clock. In one of the home's eight fireplaces, papers were burned that would have hung many a Southerner if they had fallen into Union or Federal hands. As Judge Dawkins wife's memoirs still exist, there is a great deal of written documentation highlighting the family and home beginning from the 1850s, during the tumultuous years of the civil war and through the reconstruction period. "The Shrubs," which had been built prior to the 1840s was given the distinction of being South Carolina's last capitol as a member of the Confederate States of America. Portions of the home may date back to as far as the 1790s, making it one of Union's oldest homes. The largest addition, with Federal and Georgian architectural attributes was added around 1845. Listed on the National Register in 1973 for its political and architectural historical significance, the Federal period home is currently privately owned & has gone through extensive restoration: Including new electric and water utilities, new water heater, and cosmetic and structural improvements too numerous to mention. This home is a diamond in the rough and is a terrific opportunity for the history lover who would like to live in and restore a major piece of SC history. Approx. 1/4 acre, 4000+ sq. foot home, 5 bedrooms, 2 parlors, library, 8 fireplaces with original mantles, back portion of the home could be converted into a separate apartment for investment income! Historic protective easement conveys with home. *1st floor hall light, library lamp, left hand 2nd floor bedroom light do not convey with home.
