    What's special

Own this unique compound, containing seven beautifully renovated units, at 1225 and 1231 Marais St. These four historic buildings are considered outstanding examples of Creole architecture, typical of construction in Treme during the early 1800’s. Both houses have been featured in numerous books and publications though out the years: New Orleans Architecture, Volume VI: Faubourg Treme and the Bayou Road, A Pattern Book of New Orleans Architecture, New Orleans Historic Homes, New Orleans Magazine, Biz New Orleans Magazine, New Orleans Living Magazine, as well as various articles in the Times Picayune. The property is an inner city oasis with a salt water pool, 2 lush courtyards containing varieties of fruit trees such as, Banana, Meyer Lemon, Satsuma, Japanese Plum, Pineapple Guava, as well as many other plants grown in the semi-tropical climate of New Orleans. There are 9 parking spaces secured by an electronic iron gate. French Creole brothers, Terence and Francois Cousin built this pair of brick Creole cottages, with original outbuildings, shortly after they purchased the Marais St. lots in 1828. The brothers retained the rental properties until 1843. The Cousin Family was the largest land owner in St Tammany Parish, producing timber and bricks along Bayou Liberty and Bayou Bonfouca. The Cousin’s brickyards supplied many of the bricks necessary to rebuild the French Quarter after the fires of 1788 and 1794 and were used in the construction of the Marais St. structures
