    What's special

Original hardwood floorsBig clawfoot bathtubStained-glass windows

Hey all -- we're opening up our downstairs unit starting April 1. The house itself is a classic 1907 build. Back in the '80s, it was lifted to create a separate apartment on the ground floor, so you get that vintage feel with a bit of a unique history. We last updated the kitchen in 2017 with new appliances, but we made sure to keep the character there are original hardwood floors, stained-glass windows, and a big clawfoot bathtub. The layout is an L-shape that opens into the kitchen, which is nice because you can either keep it feeling wide and airy or section off a corner if you need a dedicated workspace. One of the things we love most about living here is how tucked away yet connected it feels. We're right on the edge of everything about a half-block from the Oakland line and just a few blocks from Berkeley. If you like being outside, the bicycle and pedestrian greenway is just at the end of the block. It's a really easy, half-mile stroll to Berkeley Bowl West, or you can head the other direction to the Bay Street mall and the newly-opened Tokyo Central Market. We're also lucky to be surrounded by some of the best food in the area. Jungdon Katsu and Good to Eat are favorites of ours, as are Secrets of Tiger or Mujiri Sushi. If you want to grab a drink, Prizefighter, The Honor Bar, Branchline and Wondrous Brewing Company are all within an easy walk. Getting around is pretty straightforward: We're close to the base of the Bay Bridge and all the major freeway interchanges (I-80, 580, 880, and 980). If you take the bus, the AC Transit lines to San Francisco or Oakland are a few blocks away. For BART, both Ashby and MacArthur stations are about a mile out, and the Bay Trail is a quick bike ride if you want to get near the water. Regarding the logistics: Utilities: You'd handle gas, electric, and internet. Laundry: There's a coin-op washer and dryer on-site that we share (we live upstairs). Parking: We don't have a driveway or garage, but street parking on our block is usually pretty easy to find. Pets: We're open to chatting about pets; they're generally negotiable but require an additional deposit. (We're mostly concerned about preserving the hardwood floors from scratchy nails.) You'd be sharing the property with us. We're a couple in our late 30s and 40s with a young child and a dog. It's a pretty uniquely tight-knit community here, mostly due to our next-door neighbor, who hosts a number of events, including a massive annual block party and a semi-monthly "Saturday Stoop" hang, which is just an informal gathering where people bring coffee and pastries out to the sidewalk to catch up for a bit. Also, on Halloween, the city has, for the past two years and probably again this year, shut down our block for trick-or-treaters. That same neighbor puts on a huge haunted house and other neighbors put up decorations or bring out activities for the kiddos. It's a good time. If it sounds like a good fit for you, let's talk! Tenant pays for gas, electric and internet. Move in with first + deposit only. Laundry is on-site and coin-operated. Well-behaved critters may be considered for an additional deposit. Prefer one year minimum. Street parking. No corporate landlords. Just nice people.
