Imagine living in an active piece of art surrounded by sandstone cliffs, the sounds of birds and flowing water against an ocean backdrop in the Del Mar hills… Originally, the house was commissioned in the late 1970s by Artist Flossie Cohen and her husband. They hired, then unlicensed, Rob Quigley to design the home. The following was taken from a San Diego Magazine Cover story May 1979 describing the project. Impressed by the site in the small canyon, Quigley pushed the house against the northern property line like a grandstand, with souring windows to the south, opening onto the whirling, sculptured sandstone cliffs. He created a secondary view over the ocean to the west, a design choice anticipating further building in the neighborhood over which the Cohen’s would have no control. Aware of the "soul" of a dwelling, Quigley "fantasized on a spatial essence of the canyon" while he designed. Asking himself what the natural rhythms of water which carved the setting would do to a dwelling. The result is a house like a waterfall, seeming to emerge from some primeval reality in the master bedroom upstairs plummeting downward into a series of quiet pools and eddies each at successively lower levels - the studio, the dining area, the living room.
