    What's special

House was designed by noted North Carolina architect, J. M. McMichael and completed in 1917. It was fully renovated in 1983 with new copper roof, new commercial grade 400 amp three-phase electrical system, new plumbing system and all exterior wood trim replaced. It is heated and cooled by four open-loop geothermal heat pumps with steam humidifiers and electronic air cleaners. Each room is individually temperature controlled. The house is served by an extensive wired and wireless network, business-style phone and intercom system and commercial grade fire and burglar alarm system. The house has two 80 gallon water heaters, one electric and one gas. It is centrally wired for cable and/or satellite tv. The kitchen was fully renovated in 2015 with a second dishwasher and clear ice machine in addition to what is listed. A 60 gallon/minute well provides water for the heat pumps, irrigation, and household requirements. A city water connection provides back-up. There are five working fireplaces two of which are wood-burning and three with gas fire-baskets. The library is paneled with bookshelves customized to house a pair of Klipschorn loudspeakers. Six ground floor rooms feature antique chandeliers. The home is surrounded by an iron fence with brick knee wall. There are two drive-in entrances one of which has an electric gate with telephone access. There is a walk-in entrance on N Main St. The south side yard contains a 20' x 40' roman shaped gunite swimming pool with spa surrounded by a deck of brick pavers. A separate two-car brick carriage house is connected to the main house by colonnade.
