This is a neighborhood of traditional American families, typically with a father, mother and kids. That said, it is ethnically diverse with people of East Indian, Asian, Hispanic and Anglo descent. It is also diverse in that some of the families hail from the first-generation of buyers in the 1960s and 1970s and are older couples with grown children. Most others have school-aged kids ranging in age from elementary to middle school to high school and college. Many of the families have lived here for years. Our family is a relative newcomer, having lived in our home only since 2004. The school district information is crucial because people buy homes in Los Altos many times so they can send their children to the Los Altos public schools, which are excellent and rival those of the more "famous" Cupertino. Our family chose Los Altos for several key reasons: the public schools; the easy work commutes to downtown San Jose and to the Peninsula via Interstate 280; and the relatively fast access to exceptional public recreation areas such as Stevens Creek County Park, Rancho San Antonio and the string of parks at the top of Page Mill Road. The quality of life in Los Altos is among the best in the country. People are friendly, and neighbors to a person are kind and considerate.
