    What's special

This quintessential West Midwood house in Victorian Flatbush has loads of original details and exudes the warmth and comfort of a true home. At the turn of the 20th Century, prolific Architect Benjamin Driesler designed the house along with hundreds of other homes in Flatbush and brownstone Brooklyn. So many features of the house suggest the charm of a bygone era--high ceilings, floral motif doorknobs, tucked-away built-in cabinets, glass chandeliers, sturdy shaker doors. The place transports you to another world. It's amazing to find a home like this in a big city! Make your way through the leafy front gardens through a beautiful screened-in slate-tiled porch and enter into a front hall that has a big closet and is nicely set apart from the grand south-facing, bay-windowed living room. Beyond this splendid main space, with its high ceilings and gorgeous original inlay wood floor, is a charming and sunny kitchen that can be accessed three ways: via a little pass-over staircase or through the arched living room and dining room entryways. The spacious kitchen has plenty of room for an island and boasts exposed brick, a skylight, a cornered window in an alcove that is the perfect place for a breakfast nook, and an adjacent pantry space for loads of extra storage. Off of the pantry is a convenient powder room that has sweet vintage tilework, and beyond this area is a huge, bright and stately dining room that has a beamed ceiling and a stunning antique wall mirror, as well as two double corner windows. Up the graceful original staircase is a second floor that has four large, light-filled bedrooms, two of which are adjoined by a pass-through closet. One adjoined bedroom has a great walk-in cedar closet. Both rooms are interestingly shaped with lots of windows. In the hallway are pretty sconces, Victorian linen cupboards, and a big linen closet in addition to a spacious full bathroom with vintage features. An enormous open artist's loft on the third floor has the potential to be a luxurious primary bedroom suite or a comfortable family room. This space boasts vaulted ceilings, two skylights, seven tutor-style diamond-paned windows, and lots of great alcoves and nooks. An additional room on this floor, with its oversized skylight and exposed brick wall, could be a pleasant office or an enviable walk-in closet. In addition to the three floors, there is a finished basement that has a full bathroom, a kitchenette, a washer/dryer, tons of storage, and a separate exit to the backyard. Upon seeing the front and back gardens, you won't be surprised to hear that this part of Victorian Flatbush was once a sycamore forest. The expansive, fenced-in private backyard is bricked and thoughtfully planted with Norwegian fir, crepe myrtle, azaleas, hydrangeas, and more. A sprinkler system keeps the plants hydrated and healthy, and a decked above-ground pool adds to the magical quality of this special place, which is tranquil, transporting, and feels like vacation. The deep and lush front garden, where you'll find a blue spruce, a Japanese cherry maple, a weeping willow, lilacs, and ferns, is overlooked by a quaint partially screened-in porch. It's easy to imagine spending endless peaceful hours here. The home also has a private driveway and a fenced in backyard. A delightful house--with a recently redone roof and exterior paint job--1415 Glenwood Road is situated in a part of Ditmas Park that has a strong sense of community and a small-town feel. This particular block is a cul-de-sac with a park-like grassy meridian that provides a great place for picnics and neighborhood gatherings. The street is especially festive on Halloween when it plays host to an annual Halloween parade! Although this house feels like it's in the country, it has access to all the conveniences of Brooklyn, including the B express train, the Q train, and the many shops, cafes, and services of Foster and Newkirk Avenues.
