The Joel T. Headly House is significant in american architecture as one of the only two existing examples of the "Rhine Style Villa," created by 19th Century architects Andrew Jackson Downing and his partner Calvert Vaux. Downing was considered America's first landscape designer and one of the foremost residential designers of his day. The house retains its historic grandeur from the many original features that have been lovingly preserved, and from the many thoughtful improvements. Features include 16 foot ceilings, 6 fireplaces, ornate plasterwork, AGA range, and fabulous landscaping with mature specimen trees.
