Union Square is primed to go through the same kind of renaissance that transformed Davis Square, in Somerville. The big change with Davis Square was extending the Red Line of the T subway system past Harvard Square in the 1980s. The same kind of transformation is expected in Union Square over the next five to ten years as the Green Line adds a stop in Union Square on its way to Tufts University, in neighboring Medford, MA. The stop is currently scheduled to open in 2014.
