Insulating Concrete Forms (ICF's) offer a more advanced method for forming steel reinforced, monolithic concrete walls for the residential and commercial building markets. An ICF form is comprised of two Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) panels that are held in place by high-density polypropylene (HDPP) plastic webs (ties) that are molded into the EPS foam panels. These forms are engineered to withstand the pressure of liquid concrete as it is poured into the core (cavity) of the forms. ICF walls offer a 5-IN-1 building system that provides the structural component (steel-reinforced concrete) of the wall; continuous (unbroken) insulation; integral furring surfaces to which interior and exterior are attached; and natural air and vapor barriers. The combined insulation value of the EPS forms is R23.5 (vastly superior to other insulating materials such as fiberglass). In contrast to traditionally-poured concrete walls that use heavy, hard-to-handle wooden or steel forms that are removed after the concrete is cured, the EPS panels of ICFs stay in place after the pour to provide exceptional energy-saving benefits to building owners. In addition, concrete that cures inside of ICFs is significantly stronger than the concrete formed by take-away forms as concrete in the interior if an ICF form experiences the optimum 28 day moist cure essential for maximizing strength. The typical ICF forms (blocks) much as one builds with interlocking Lego blocks, placing steel reinforcement (horizontally) in each course of blocks, bracing and aligning the walls, placement of vertical rebar after the forms have been stacked; and pouring concrete into the ICFs using a concrete pump truck with a large overhead boom and hose. When compared to other traditional wall building systems like stick-frame, the following performance and safety properties show why ICF walls are exponentially better than wood framed walls: * superior energy efficiency (40% to 50% savings in heating and cooling costs compared to stick-built homes) * remarkable resistance to nature's disasters (tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, wildfires, & earthquakes) * 3 to 4 hour fire-rating when compared to 1 hour or less for wood-frame * excellent sound insulation (blocks 80% more sound than stick-built walls) * awesome resistance to air infiltration - 10 to 20 times improvementi n the air tightness when compared to compared to contemporary wood-frame construction * significantly lower maintenance * marked improvement in interior air quality over that of traditionally built structures * very fast construction times * ICF homes last in the hundreds of years compared to wood-frame homes that must undergo structural and aesthetic repairs/improvements every 40 to 50 years * concrete structural walls are termite-proof and will not harbor rodents and other pests * reduces the HVAC system capacity requirements by 20% to 40% when compared to the equivalent homes constructed with wood-framed walls.
