You will be renting "The Tree House," nestled in a grove of Live Oak Trees, with an incredible view of the Silicon Valley, yet only a mile or so to downtown Los Gatos. 1.3 miles away from Los Gatos High School 1.6 miles away from Los Gatos Creek Trail 1.7 miles away from LG Coffee Roasting company The Treehouse was built in 1915 by best-selling author Ruth Comfort Mitchell and her husband Senator Sanborn Young. It was here that they supervised the building of the rest of the estate. The property has entertained such notable figures as President Herbert Hoover, Charlie Chaplin the movie star, poet Robert Service, and many other figures from the early part of the 20th century. A nationally known author and playwright, Ruth Comfort's works were read across America, and her plays were shown on Broadway in New York. Her life has been featured in the Los Gatos Museum, and the main house has been featured in Peggy Conway's book "Los Gatos." Images of Ruth and the house are featured on the Getty Museum website. The cottage has been remarkably preserved over the years and kept in incredible shape. Featuring quartz counter tops, a Sub-Zero refrigerator, Samsung duel-fuel range, and Kitchen-Aid convection microwave hood, the cottage is a cook's dream. When offered on the market 2 years ago, it was rented in less than 48 hours with multiple people on the waiting list. Crammed with features, the 500 square foot main house floor plan is thoughtfully laid out with 1.5 baths, laundry/pantry room, a California Customer closet, and custom en suite bathroom for the master bedroom. Included in your rental is a separate 120 square foot detached shed with seven windows, glass door and 9 foot ceilings at the peak. The shed is suitable for a private retreat and totally isolated from the main house. It could alternatively serve as a yoga studio, entertainment room, weight room, or craft house. The front door has a wonderful sitting area that has been used for many an hour by our guests. It is ready for your outdoor furniture, already has a combo propane grill and pellet smoker, and features a water fountain donated by our last renters. Tucked under the back entry staircase, is an enclosed, unheated but dry area that can be use for items like your surfboard for your Santa Cruz summers, mountain and road bikes, or any other piece of equipment you find yourself with. Total space is 620 square feet, with 500 square feet in the main house and 120 square feet in the detached shed. Inside color scheme is neutral gray walls with white ceilings with dark wood Felsen Ceramic Composite Plank flooring. Unit can be painted to your choice at an additional charge. Outside parking for your horse or horseless carriage, with possible extension for electrical charging (extra fee to connect). While a one year lease is offered, preference will be given to individuals that will sign a 2 year lease. The property's historic gardens for vegetables and fruits is currently being underused, and we would happily support anybody that decided that they would like to show off their green thumb. (Although if you like figs, the aged fig tree will satisfy you all summer with no work. Water is ample, as the garden is irrigated by the Spring "water house" built into the side of the property in the early 1900s.) The property also has a wonderful family living in the historic "Barn," used by the Senator. They maintain the chicken coop on the far side of the property and are truly wonderful and thoughtful people. For those times when your in-laws want to visit, the main house on the property has an additional 300 square foot bedroom, with an outside separate entrance, en-suite bathroom, and sitting area that is rentable for tenants of the property. Originally created for the Senator's mother, the room is the perfect place to stash the in-laws that insist that you haven't been spending enough time with them. We value diversity, and welcome all. We hope you find this a special place. We don't think of this as having a rental, but as joining a community of guests that wanted a special place to visit and live. We would welcome a well-behaved dog, as the Senator said of himself, "My own claim to fame is that I married Ruth Comfort Mitchell, I became a California State Senator and ....I raised the champion beagle." The place would welcome a friendly dog to join the other two dogs on the property. Already included animals with the property include our deer, including "one horn," a shy Bobcat, that is known to sit on a corner of the main house roof, a fox--who sadly lost its mate in a car accident, a shy skunk, and a rambling herd of wild turkeys. So far no incident with any of the residents, although the deer eat everything in the garden that isn't fenced. Current rent includes internet, garbage, and $100/month allowance for gas, water and electricity. Usage above $100 per month will be subject to a bi-yearly surcharge. We ask that you are patient with us as we arrange onsite visits. Private estate thus shown only by appointment. Tree house is not visible from street. Credit score of 680+ required with verification of income required, with preference given to renters with scores over 700. Owner pays for water, shared trash, and internet. Tenant pays for their use of electricity, gas and other amenities billed monthly.
