Alameda's Fernside District is a neighborhood of 550 homes, built between 1927 and 1929. Each of the neighborhood's 550 homes is unique, and most feature hand-crafted interior and exterior details. Many of the storybook cottage-style homes are similar to the cottages of Carmel, California. The neighborhood is a short walk to the excellent Edison Elementary School, a California Distinguished, very popular public elementary school with 375 students. The Fernside Homeowners Association, one of California's oldest, is still in force in the neighborhood. The 1927 charter limits association dues to less than $20 per year. The principal accomplishment of the Association over the past decade was its success in obtaining and enforcing a court order which prohibits commercial jets from flying over the neighborhood. This has kept the Fernside quiet and peaceful, the perfect retreat after a day at work in nearby San Francisco or Silicon Valley.
