    What's special

Sweet Acres Farm is an 190 acre farm located a few miles east of Cantril and 2 miles south of Hwy 2. Perched on the bluffs of the Fox river, it commands a view of The Fox River valley and hundreds of rolling acres beyond. This farm is unique in its diversity in that is has great cover, tillable, and excellent water provided by 4 lakes throughout the property. Each lake has been stocked several years ago with Large-mouth Bass, Bluegill, and Channel Catfish. Fishable populations are at their peak. 4 years of an intense pheasant reintroduction coupled with a habitat management program have resulted in extremely above normal pheasant populations. Additionally, 10 years of Whitetail management, tree and shrub plantings, food plots, and native grass planting have produced top end Whitetail hunting as well, producing Whitetails well over the 170" mark.In 2007, All permanent food plot locations were established investing years to build up ferility and organic matter for the highest possible yields for years to come. In 2009, over 3,500 trees and shrubs were planted over a 9 acre area in order to increase the diversity and forage for wildlife. Species included: Hackberry, White Oak, Spruce, Buttonbush, Ninebark, Dogwood, Hazelnut, Wild Plum, Elderberry, Arrowwood, Nannyberry, and Red Cedar. Fruit tree orchards were established throughout the farm. Species included various apple, pear and persimmon. Sweet Acres Farm already boasts over a 20 acre block entirely of Red Cedar. This not only provides excellent bedding for deer, but also is great wintering cover for the large number of pheasants that reside on the farm. 2009 was also the year the farm enrolled in a Biomass program in which some areas of the farm with unused fields were cultivated in Switchgrass for haying this alternative fuel source. This program has since expired, but the Switchgrass still remains providing additional cover of deer and other wildlife. 2012 welcomed yet another program; CP-33 Quail/Pheasant bufferstrips. 30-60' strips of short native grasses were planted boarding crop field edges to provide successional habitat for upland birds feeding along crop edges as well as improved Whitetail bedding. 2013 started off the TSI program (Timber Stand Improvement). The entire wooded areas of the farm undertook a transformation, improving the the growth of all mast producing trees while hinge-cutting weed species in order to create additional wildlife bedding inside the timber. 2014 was not an idle year either. As cash rent/CRP prices reached their peak, the farm decided to further improve the wildlife habitat while locking in these historically high rental rates for the next 10 years. 45 acres of the less productive tillable ground was planted in the most diverse native grass mix imaginable and far above of the FSA requirement; a 10 grass 20 forb mix with abundant wildflowers and rare plant species. Farm roads throughout the farm were outfitter with culverts and dirt work to provide year round access anywhere on the property. Currently, the farm consists of a total of 66.9 acres of tillable ground; 45.5 of the acres are in CRP, and 21.4 acres are currently in row crop. Total income for the farm is: $9,985.13. The remainder of the farm are secluded fields and blocks of timber with wooded draws. If you are looking for one of the most diverse and unique farms in southeast Iowa with over a decade of improvements...then this is the one!
