We are selling the old Alexander Kansas school building with the land it sits on. The main building was built back in 1916, the walls and arches are constructed from post rock limestone quarried just outside of Alexander, and they covered most of the limestone walls with a brick façade that gives the building a striking look. The gymnasium was later built in 1930 and the builders did an amazing job matching up the limestone and brickwork to the original building, both buildings look like they were built at the same time. The school was closed back in 1969 due to not having enough students and was sold as a residential property in 1970; it is still zoned as residential. The building is approx. 18,000 square feet and is located on the east end of Alexander. The school has nine very large classrooms, and a full basement under the main building. The gymnasium has a stage on the north end and locker rooms on both sides of the basketball court under the bleachers. There is a hallway between the gymnasium and the main building. A year and a half preservation project was taken on but was stopped in the spring of 2016 due to lack of funding. Some things were done such as the first floor windows on the main building were replaced with new glass and some were boarded up, and new water hydrant was put in the front yard, and there were things modified in the building by the previous owners when it was a home but were rebuilt in 2015 to recreate the way the school was back before it was closed in 1969. A new roof is needed on the gymnasium immediately and the roof on the main building needs to be repaired, we have had estimates to get it replaced and will cost around 60k for both roofs. The floor on the stage is completely deteriorated and needs to be replaced due to the roof leaking on it for so many years. The building has a ton of history and is one of the most architecturally beautiful and most photographed abandoned school buildings in Kansas, it is one of the icons along highway 96. (Important note!) This school is abandoned and has been for a very long time, there are some areas of the school that need a lot of attention which could run into a lot of money if someone were to restore the building so that it can be used for living space or storage, this is why we are only showing this to serious buyers and only by appointment. We live two hours from this location so only serious inquiries accepted. If you're wanting to purchase this building just because of it's price and want to leave it sit we will not except your offer, this building needs to be in the hands of someone who has the means to fix it. This building has been exposed to the elements for many years including pigeons and other birds and needs a lot of cleaning so don't be surprised.
