    What's special

Building is located on the courthouse square in the historical district. Building has been restored and is rich in Architectural detail and high quality finishes, details and spaces. Building was originally designed by Vonnegut (yes, Kurt's dad) and Bohn architects from Indianapolis. The building was originally built with a 30,000 gallon tank on the roof for its state of the art sprinkler system. It was built in 1913 originally as the Schultz department store. Shultz closed in the great depression. The building was converted to medical offices including Arnett clinic. The building was purchased in 2001 by C. Thomas Walgamuth a local Architect who restored the exterior to its original configuration, renovated the interior, converting the third and fourth floor to urban loft style living units. The building is built to Chicago skyscraper specifications including reinforced concrete frame including the floors and ceiling for robust earthquake resistant construction. The living units and all exitways are sprinklered for excellent fire safety with state of the art fire detection and warning systems. The living units vary in size from 420 SF studios to 1400 SF two bedroom two bath. Most have excellent views to the south (the historic courthouse) or to the east (many historic buildings). Large insulated glass windows provide excellent natural lighting. All units from the smallest to the largest feature open floor plans for a spacious feel. All units have up to date electrical panels, central air conditioning and up to date mechanicals. Everything inside each unit has been refurbished even when re-using historic elements such as doors and trim. All units are finished to a high quality finish level. Historic trim and doors are used along with hand made architect designed lighting fixtures using antique glass from the building. Some units feature granite kitchen tops and stainless finishes on appliances. Track lighting in living areas to highlight your art work. There is a lovely historic elevator cab with indirect lighting and stained glass ceiling. Hallways are well maintained with artwork on the walls, some of which are signed prints. All third floor units have the original maple hardwood floors refinished. All fourth floor units have terrazzo (a granite like material) floors. The building is chosen by many advanced degree residents, faculty from Purdue and other professional adults. This unit is a 466 sf one bedroom one bath with open floor plan with 11' ceilings, refinished original maple floors and many wonderful repurposed Atchitectural artifacts incorporated into the build. It has a full kitchen with lots of cabinets and a view to the north toward the historic post office. There is a full size refrigerator with glass shelves, a stove with an oven, a stainless exhaust hood and a full size stack washer and dryer which are conveniently located within the living area of the apartment. There is a built in coat rack at the front door and a closet in the bedroom. We also have studios, larger one bedrooms and a 1400 SF two bedroom, two bath unit. Owner pays for trash. Tenant pays a share of the economical gas fired boiler heat, water and sewer and elevator maintenance. Prewired for phone, cable and internet. Downtown location convenient to Purdue University by foot, bike or on the free shuttle bus which runs down main street across the south edge of the building. HI Speed fiber optic internet is included in the rent.
