About the Fry’s Spring Neighborhood For many years the Fry’s Spring area of Charlottesville was a ‘vacation’ destination for families from other Virginia locations, primarily Richmond. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, during the heat of the summer months, wives and children took the train to Charlottesville and stayed at the Jefferson Park Hotel. Husbands stayed behind to work in the heat of the city, commuting to Charlottesville by train on weekends, while the families enjoyed the slightly cooler environment of the pleasant Fry’s Spring location. People also took advantage of the springs, which were said to have health giving qualities. In the 1920s the beach club and pools were built, drawing water from the springs to fill the pool. For many many years the beach club pools and facilities were the only place such amenities could be enjoyed in the Charlottesville area by the general public. The original springs still exist but in a deteriorated condition. The Fry’s Spring Beach Club is still going strong! Google on Fry’s Spring.
