In 1811 Jonathan Scholfield purchased this quarter block from the widow of Henry Piercy, a Revolutionary officer who came to Alexandria from Philadelphia after the Revolution. In 1792 he advertised pottery from "Northen Ware Manufactory," a stone building on this quarter block. A substantial amount of Pierce's pottery has been retrieved from a waste pit at the rear of 220. In 1812 Schofield built a row of three two-story and five three-story brick houses (the end house faces to Duke. Only one two-story house still stands, 220, bought by Judge William Cranch in 1817. He lived there until 1821. Cranch was appointed an Assistant Judge of the Circuit Court of the United States for the District of Columbia in 1801, and Chief Judge, in 1806. Described as "a man of perfectly old fashioned New England manners." Cranch was a nephew of Abigail Adams, and the great-grandfather of T.S. Eliot, the poet and critic. John Lloyd bought Scholfield's houses at public auction in 1816. The five three-story houses remained in the Lloyd family for many years. WiFi and Utilities included.
