Welcome to a lovely French Country style home—nearly one-hundred years old and brimming with charm and character—right in the heart of Kalamazoo’s Westnedge Hill neighborhood. Located near the end of Plymouth Drive, the home is sunken into a garden wrapped by a stone wall, surrounded by mature trees and perched above Bronson Blvd on its backside. In other words you have (great) neighbors, but feel very private on this property. And the only folks driving down this road are those intended to be there. Hand-textured plaster walls, newly finished wide-plank oak flooring, a five year old multi-colored slate roof, frame & ledge doors, and arched entryways are just some of the ways this house will win your heart. Designed by Howard Fields Young and constructed in 1925, I took ownership of this house a year ago with hopes and dreams of renovation. Alas, life has changed course and I must now leave these visions largely unfulfilled for the next owner. A two-story with an unfinished (but full-size) basement, all three bedrooms are upstairs including the more-than-generous master bedroom, and the full bath is upstairs too. The house has ample closets and storage, which can’t always be found in a home from this era. A generous living-room, dining-room (currently used as my office), kitchen, and half-bath make up the main floor along with an absolutely delightful entry full of architectural shapes, and details you don’t find in new construction. French doors lead to a small back patio from the living room, which in the summer months puts you right in the canopy of the trees on the back slope. The single-car garage is attached by a covered walkway which reveals its utility on days of sleet, rain, and snow. Next to that is a low carport for covered trash and recycling, as well as additional covered parking. The basement, though unfinished, includes recessed windows so a bedroom can be added, if so desired. An external set of covered stairs provides alternative access. The sewer has been relined this year and is under warranty. Songbirds abound, and bird lovers will enjoy the usual black-capped chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, juncos, cardinals, house finches, peewees, woodpeckers, and the new-to-me Great Crested Flycatcher—to name a few. A pair of owls often doze throughout the day in the tree tops and announce their awakening each evening with a hoot hoo hoo. Deer make themselves comfortable throughout the year in the front and side yard too. Drinking your morning coffee, you feel like you’re in a remote country home on those mornings when you when you watch the birds feed, then a mother and her fawns mosey across the back as the snow silently falls, and covers the trees providing the perfect winter backdrop. This beautiful home is for sale, reluctantly, by owner. To schedule a visit, just contact me through Zillow. Offer deadline set for Sunday (Dec 24) at 6pm.
