Neighborhood Description The Sunnyland Neighborhood is centrally located in Bellingham and is within close proximity to many downtown public facilities. The neighborhood has a diverse mix of commercial, indusrial and residential areas. Assumption Church, one of the largest Gothic church buildings in Bellingham, is a prominent feature of the neighborhood. Assumption School and the newly remodeled Bellingham High School are located on either side of the Church. The northern section of the neighborhood is primarily residential with lower densities in the north and higher density housing to the west. There are many well maintained single-family homes on small lots in the northern area. Many of these homes belong to residents who have lived in the neighborhood for years. Other homes, however, are showing signs of aging and disrepair. The Commercial and industrial areas of the Sunnyland neighborhood are to the south along Ohio Street and north of Whatcom Creek. Many local businesses are located along James Street including several restaurants, the locally owned Hardware Sales, and Youngstock's open-air market. Sunset Square, located near the north end of the neighborhood, has a Cost Cutter supermarket, Rite-Aid, K-Mart, Sunset Cinema, several other stores and restaurants. Downtown is located next the the neighborhood's southern end. Memorial Park is located behind Sunnyland Elementary School. This park was established to honor war veterans. Cornwall Park is located a short distance away to the northwest.
