The Carlton Towers came to be during the era of the Beatles love anthem, "I Want to Hold Your Hand". It was a time when American hearts fell with the loss of a president, but rose again to the message, "I have a dream." The year 1963 marked the beginnings of urban sprawl in Salt Lake City, with the average home price at $12,000, and gas just $0.29 a gallon. All sorts just started choosing to live in the city. At the time, there were slim pickings when it came to high-rise living. Salt Lake had just begun to declare itself with architectural statements. Downtown boasted a modern library, police station, and courthouse. Much like the Beatles, Carlton Towers represented a cultural revolution, transforming the idea of community and big city life. As a resident, one could really have it all: the private space of the condo unit, and an extended living room with a roof-top pool. Oh, and, the valley-wide views. The indoor-outdoor idea of modern living was being translated into shared space, and the promise of shared ideas. All these years later, the 60's influence on this building can still be felt.
