    What's special

HISTORY This 1903 Colonial Revival Bungalow was originally built for New Yorkers Ferdinand and Laura Mead. Mr. Mead co-owned a real estate insurance company here in Tacoma at the turn of the last century. Perhaps more important to the history of the home were its third owners, William and Paula Keyser, who purchased it in 1955. Keyser was a local fireman who had the foresight to save valuable architectural elements from a number of grand Tacoma homes and commercial buildings that were being demolished in the 1950s and to incorporate those salvaged treasures into his own home. Most notable are the leaded glass bay window in the dining room and the figurative ceramic tile and mantle in the living room. Those particular items were saved from the Hewitt mansion, built in 1890 and demolished in 1957. The Mead-Keyser House is included on the Tacoma Register of Historic Places in large part due to the historically significant architectural elements that William Keyser saved, elements that live on in the home today. PROPERTY This historically significant Proctor bungalow offers a double French door front entry into a large formal living room with wood burning fireplace, detailed crown molding and parquet floors. The home also features a formal dining room with built-in china cabinet, an intimate den with gas fireplace, an updated eat-in kitchen with central island, a butler's pantry, a laundry room and a main floor master suite with a full bath. A second bedroom is located off the dining room with its own dressing area and three quarter bath. Upstairs you'll find a private sitting area, a third bedroom and an additional three quarter bathroom. The grounds feature beautifully landscaped irrigated front and side yards and a large private patio accessed from a covered porch off the den. The property also includes an attached two car drive-through garage, a potting shed and an unfinished basement. NEIGHBORHOOD The Proctor District is one of Tacoma's most celebrated and desirable neighborhoods, offering residents an urban village experience reminiscent of a simpler time. The area features a wonderful mix of owner operated shops and restaurants, including the upscale Metropolitan Market, Chalet Bowl and the historic Blue Mouse Theater - the oldest continuously operating movie theater in Washington State. The University of Puget Sound, which moved its campus to its current North End location back in 1924, provides neighbors with access to a wide variety of academic and cultural activities. The Proctor District hosts a lively local farmer's market, the second largest in the city, every Saturday from April through November. The neighborhood offers excellent public schools and easy access to Point Defiance Park, the waterfront and downtown Tacoma.
