    What's special

This stately Craftsman was built in 1913 for Tacoma industrialist Isaac Hague, who lived in the home for just a short time before selling it to Iowa native Clarence Gammon, MD in 1915. Dr. Gammon used the house both as his residence and office, with the foyer on the south side of the home serving as his waiting room. Dr. Gammon was stationed at Fort Lewis and served as a medic in both the Spanish-American War and WWI. He and his wife Mary Winder were scions of early Tacoma society, and Gammon was one of Tacoma's most prominent surgeons at the time of his death in 1943. Gammon's son Francis and his family took up residence in the house when Mary died in 1953. Francis and his family remained there until 1968. With its unique double-gabled roof, rich social history and an abundance of intact original architectural details, the Gammon House is eligible for nomination to the Tacoma Register of Historic Places. The home's formal living areas boast original unspoiled fir wainscoting and trim, quarter-sawn oak floors, leaded and stained glass windows, period lighting fixtures, ornate hardware, an impressive fir staircase and a wood burning fireplace. The main floor also features an original enclosed front porch with water views, a second formal entry accessed from the porte-cochere, the kitchen and a mud room with adjacent half bath. Located upstairs are four bedrooms and a large full bath with a claw foot tub. The master bedroom has a large walk-in closet, the two front bedrooms have water views and the fourth bedroom was the original servant quarters.
