Custer County was created in 1877 out of the southern half of Fremont County. Westcliffe, the seat of Custer County, is in a very rural part of southern Colorado with a valley floor elevation of 7,888 feet and five 14,000-ft peaks in the immediate area. It is served by State Highways 69 and 96, only 55 miles to Pueblo and 75 miles to Colorado Springs. The human population of Custer County is 4,500.
