Aguilar, Colorado in Southern Las Animas County Aguilar is located about one mile west of I-25.  Known as the Gateway to the Spanish Peaks, and located along the Highway of Legends, Aguilar is the eastern approach to the west peak by way of county road 43.7 that passes through Gulnare on the way to Cuchara, which is located on the eastern slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the heart of the Cucharas River Valley. Cuchara is surrounded by the San Isabel National Forest with all of its lakes, mountains, and wilderness. Founded in 1888 and incorporated in 1894, being named for state legislator, José Ramón Aguilar. The town once boasted a population of over 2,500 in the heyday of the coal mining boom in southern Colorado. In 1878 the railroad was built linking New Mexico to Denver. Tying into rail lines that ran east of the town opened the front range for immigrants seeking a better life and for business owners seeking new opportunities. In 1892 the Colorado & Southern Railway built a branch line into the Aguilar town limits. This was the beginning of the years that the town experienced its growth. At its peak, there were 4 hotels, numerous grocery stores and drug stores, 3 churches, a bank, a mortuary, and 14 saloons.   Trinidad was recently featured on an episode of Rocky Mountain PBS Colorado Experience. What to do in Trinidad, Colorado The Trinidad Welcome Center -staff provides destination information, routing suggestions, road conditions, weather information, ect. To learn more about the history of Trinidad and the Santa Fe Trail, check out the Corazon de Trinidad National Historic District's Baca House and Bloom Mansion, both part of the Trinidad History Museum. The Louden-Henritze Archeology Museum features Trinidad's pre-history, where you'll find artifacts from the nearby Trinchera Cave, where prehistoric humans lived for thousands of years. Southern Colorado Repertory Theater in Trinidad produces professional theatre, community theatre, special events and educational programs for teens and youth.  A.R. Mitchell Museum of Western Art houses the largest collection of works by Arthur Roy Mitchell, known for his cowboy-themed paintings, and other Western artists; and admire one of the largest collections of stately Victorian houses west of the Mississippi. Trinidad Lake State Park also offers camping, hiking, fishing, boating and an archery range, while Comanche National Grassland to the east boasts Picket Wire Canyonlands --home to one of the largest known dinosaur track sites in North America. The Purgatoire River flows through Trinidad and excellent trout-fishing access is available in town at select spots along its banks. Take a peaceful walk along the waterway on the Riverwalk; or visit historic Kit Carson Park to view the bronze statue of Kit Carson. Trinidad is also the starting point for the Scenic Highway of Legends, a historic drive through villages to Walsenburg to the north.
