John M. Crane House The frame building attached to the east end of the main house and standing gable to the street was the old "Neck Schoolhouse". The schoolhouse was built in 1737 about a quarter of a mile from here, at the intersection of Ridge and Orchard Streets. For one hundred forty years it served the children of this end of town. When a larger school was needed, the owner of this brick house, John M. Crane (his wife was schoolmarm) bought the old schoolhouse and moved it down and attached it to his home in its present location. The brick edifice was constructed in about 1833 by Venus Bullard. In the 1890s it was again used as a temporary school when the new school burned down. Amos Towl lived here and the Island in front of the house is know as Towl's Corner.
