The Fernwood is a turn of the century cottage with a great location right off Bestor plaza. The home is well maintained with wrapped porches and is currently set up as three apartments: a one bedroom on the first floor and two bedroom apartments on the second and third floors. The property could easily convert to a single family or a first and second floor apartment with a separate third floor unit. The home is offered mostly furnished except for a few personal items. In 2004, the owners installed a new roof. From 2007-2009, the home was renovated. The Chautauqua annual service fee is approximately $876.00. The apartments have a strong rental history for $1200-$1700 per week / $10,000-15,000/season each. In the words of the former owners. "We have enjoyed the location of this house at the very hub for more than a century of history. Ideal for active Chautauquans, it is only a stone’s throw from Bestor Plaza, so that one can walk to the Library, the Amphitheatre, the Hultquist Center, the Colonnade, the Post Office, the Bookstore in one to three minutes, while most other popular sites -the beach, the movie, Norton Hall, the Hall of Philosophy - take only two to five minutes longer. Yet we rarely found the bustle of Miller Avenue to be less than pleasant. The charm and graciousness of this old house with its porches, stained glass windows and tall stand of ferns have beguiled us year after year. Its interior arches and dining room have especially made it feel like a real home, enabling entertaining, both planned and spontaneous. All these years, a stream of musicians, poets, novelists and journalists working at Chautauqua have enjoyed coming back to the second and third floor apartments as their base whenever invited. Some ambiance must be the reason that--very frequently--we have noticed visiting strangers snapping pictures of Fernwood. It is a place to remember."
