HISTORY This stately Colonial Revival was built by Sherman Blair in 1906 for local dentist George Lord, who subsequently sold the property to widow May Heuston soon after the death of her husband Benjamin in 1910. Heuston was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin who had moved to Tacoma with her husband in 1890. She was a quintessential Tacoma socialite and mother who also managed to conduct groundbreaking work for the Pure Food Movement, the precursor to the present day Food and Drug Administration. Through this work, Heuston became acquainted with the Mayo brothers of Minnesota, founders of the Mayo Clinic, and she often entertained them in her home. The Heuston House is listed on the national, state and local Registers of Historic Places, and the owners of the property will receive significant property tax benefits through 2017. PROPERTY Features of this thoughtfully restored home include an inviting wraparound porch, a formal entry with a petite foyer, a formal living room with an original tile fireplace surround, a large formal dining room, original wainscoting and trim, original windows, oak floors and impressive Commencement Bay views. The eat-in kitchen has been updated with custom cabinets, soapstone counters, a cleverly hidden half bath and stainless appliances that include a DCS range, a Liebherr refrigerator, a GE Monogram wall oven and a Miele dishwasher. The second floor features an ample master suite with a sun porch and a luxurious bathroom with vintage fixtures, a shower room and a soaking tub. Two additional bedrooms, a hall bath and laundry are also located on the second floor. A spacious third floor office with custom built-ins and window seat is accessed from the master suite. The lower level features a family room and unfinished storage space. The grounds include mature landscaping, a fenced yard and a carport currently used as an outdoor living room. NEIGHBORHOOD The Proctor District is one of Tacoma's most celebrated and desirable neighborhoods, offering residents an urban village experience reminiscent of a simpler time. The area features a wonderful mix of owner operated shops and restaurants, including the upscale Metropolitan Market, Chalet Bowl and the historic Blue Mouse Theater - the oldest continuously operating movie theater in Washington State. The University of Puget Sound, which moved its campus to its current North End location back in 1924, provides neighbors with access to a wide variety of academic and cultural activities. The Proctor District hosts a lively local farmer's market, the second largest in the city, every Saturday from April through November. The neighborhood offers excellent public schools and easy access to Point Defiance Park, the waterfront and downtown Tacoma.
