    Starting out as a rural community at a crossroads, Waldorf was settled just before the turn of the 20th century. The town sprung up around the train station and was named Beantown after one of the local families. It changed to Waldorf in 1880, a name chosen from William Waldorf Astor. For several decades, Waldorf was best known as a tobacco market. This changed in 1949 with the legalization of slot machines in Charles County. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Waldorf was a prime destination for gambling, but all this ended in 1968 when gambling was outlawed. The town went through a subsequent transition in 1970, when it received a loan package from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. This allowed for the construction of a planned community and the town became a residential center. A characteristic of Waldorf is its green spaces. A favorite is Pinefield Community Park, which has soccer fields and a playground and ideal for picnics. Another is Accokeek East Community Park, which is great for families and dog walking. Another favorite is the Indian Head Rail Trail. This was once a railroad track which was paved over and turned into a 13-mile bike/jogging trail. This is an amazing home in an amazing 55+ community.
