I have lovingly restored this one-bedroom, pre-war apartment in The Whitby to its original, 1920s style, including all the wall and crown mouldings. The ceilings are box-beam style. I refinished the oak floors in the main room and bedroom. The milk-glass-windowed bath's original, deep tub has been refinished, the sink is pedestal style, the bath floor has the original hexagonal tiles, and the bath walls are classic subway tiles. Only the Pullman-style kitchen has been modernized, with a new refrigerator, new electric stove, and shelf-mounted microwave in new floor and wall cabinets. There is a large closet by the kitchen, and a large walk-in closet in the bedroom, which also has a window-mounted air conditioner. Both the bedroom and the main room have recently-installed, reversible, old-style ceiling fans with attached lights. The windows are large, making apartment 310 brightly lit. The Whitby is located across the street from the Al Hirschfeld Theatre (FKA the Martin Beck Theatre, 302 West 45th Street), in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood (AKA the Clinton neighborhood). Also across the street (at 332 West 45th Street) is the building which housed Billy Haas's Chophouse, out of which Judge Joseph Force Crater emerged on 5 August 1930, entered a taxi, and vanished. His disappearance, like that of Jimmy Hoffa, still is unsolved. The building is 3 blocks from the A/C/E/N/Q/R subway lines and 4 blocks from the 1/2/3/B/D/F/M/S subway lines. The Whitby is an elevator building, with 217 apartments (of which apartment 310 is the best, of course!), and a new, Art Deco style lobby. The building's amenities include a new, large laundry room, 24-hour concierge service, a live-in super, a night & weekend security guard, a full-time building manager, a handyman, and porters. It has a bike-storage room, a secure package room, and storage is available. The building is accessible by wheelchair. The new roof deck is gorgeous, with a 360-degree view! The famous architect Emery Roth designed The Whitby in the 1920s. It has been the home or pied-a-terre for many artists, including Doris Day, Betty Grable, George Burns, Clarence Derwent, Diane Ladd, and Wallace Shawn. Al Capone stayed there, although legend says it was the showgirls, not the amenities, that drew him. I am not charging a broker's fee, and board approval is not required (only mine). My philosophy as a landlord is to provide my tenant with an excellent-quality home in which I would want to live, not just a barely adequate residential space to be rented out and ignored thereafter. A happy tenant makes for a happy landlord! If you look like a good fit, I will charge a $20 application fee (non-refundable, but applicable to the rent/deposits if we agree to your renting the apartment) and ask you to fill in a rental application. If all looks good, I will then call you to make an appointment to see beautiful apartment 310. Thank you for looking! Kelly K. Brown.
