Circa 1840 Greek Revival. The William Tusten Vanduser house was originally built on 20 acres but now sits on a one acre lot. Originally a 4 over 4 post and beam structure with 8 fire places. A cabbaged addition attached to the rear of the house has been torn down. In its place a 1500 square foot addition has been added which includes rooms for a large master suite, bath, huge walk-in closet, kitchen and back porch with Trex flooring. The addition has been clad with 4” showing Hardie board siding to match the original heart pine, it has been foam insulated and a heat pump with ductwork has been installed.
The main house has original heart pine flooring and some original board walls and ceilings. Original cross and bible doors with their original Carpenter locks. The doors were grain painted probably in the late nineteenth century and the steps on the staircase have been painted to mimic carpet insets. Original mantles exist in the front top bedrooms.
Only one of two houses in Elberton with “Elberton lites” surrounding the front doors. These are increasing size lites surrounding the doorway.
All the heavy and tedious work has been done. The floors have been leveled and several concrete block piers were added for stability.
The house has been completely rewired with a new panel and two sub panels. The electric service is UG. The 3/8” Sheetrock has been removed from the walls and they have been shimmed for your choice of wall covering, sheet rock or board. There is a potential of four bedrooms upstairs.
The older but not original windows have been replaced with Jeldwin
9 over 9 thermal wood replacement windows. The windows in the new addition are Pella. This home is ready for PEX plumbing to be installed by the new owner.
This house sits approximately 100’ from the road with a 10’ walkway leading up to the front porch.
A concrete pad exists at the rear for a three bay garage.
There is an area that an elevator could be installed in the back hallway and a 1/2 bath could be added behind the staircase.
Right now a nice stand of bamboo is in part of the backyard. A local contractor is available to remove it completely and place a barrier to prevent future invasion.
If you’re looking for an original 1840’s Greek Revival with modern energy efficiencies, this is it.
Principals only. At less than $80.00 sq ft you can’t start to frame this house much less imbue the character and charm of its historical nature.
What the owner loves about this home
The location of this home is convenient to everything. You can walk to downtown, take a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood or just watch the squirrels play. The hospital is close if needed and police and fire departments are less than a half mile away. A Main Street but not very traveled. Sitting on the front porch in my Brumby rocker watching the world go by in the evening is my most preferred thing to do.
