Skytsborgtarn, meaning sky tower, was built in 1679 to protect Fort Christian and as a vantage point to spot enemy ships. In the 18th century the tower became the centerpiece of a private residence and was owned by an Irish colonist, a French merchant, Danish harbor captain. Skytsborg is one of five National Historic Landmarks on the US Virgin Islands and one of the few seventeenth century fortified towers in the Caribbean.
