This home was originally built as a farm house in 1918 as a single story home with attic, partial basement and detached garage. The home at that time appeared to have one bedroom and one bath. Based on the style of the linoleum squares in one of the upstairs closets, the second floor appears to have been built in the 1930s, adding three more bedrooms to the home. The basement was expanded from partial to full no later than the 1960s due to the old oil supply line located on the expanded side of the basement and the furnace being converted to gas in the late 1960s. Architectural features and windows located on the west side of the home suggest major updates during the 1950s and 1960s including the addition of a living room to the main floor at the back of the home. Perhaps as late as the 2000s a portion of the west roof was raised for the addition of a second bath on the second floor. During the 2000s the plumbing supply was redone with PECS, much of the electrical was updated, and a security system was installed. The two story detached garage was rebuilt after 2010 using the original foundation after decades of having no garage on the property. In 2012 the kitchen was provisioned with a dishwasher and a garbage disposal. Neighborhood Description The neighborhood is diverse and evolving. Once a trolley stop in the 1890s, Hillman City became a Seattle neighborhood in 1907. New businesses continue to open both in Hillman City and neighboring Columbia City along Rainier Ave. Located between the Columbia City and Othello Link light rail stations, it is easy to get downtown or to SeaTac International Airport. Brighton Play Field is centrally located and Lake Washington and Seward Park are just a few blocks to the east. The local post office and library are within walking distance in Columbia City along with many great restaurants. You will want to keep home and car doors locked as break-ins do happen on occasion. The neighborhood is safe and very walkable but walking alone at night is not recommended. Neighbors are friendly and do keep an eye on the neighborhood but generally keep to themselves.
