    What's special

Here's your opportunity to enjoy a classic Chester County farmhouse with ample space to relax during these days of quarantine. Situated on 1.2 acres just outside of West Chester Borough, Oermead is known as one of the original Chester County Day homes. This 288-year-old stone and stucco farmhouse features a classic center hall design and a wrap around porch featuring sunset views that have been enjoyed for over a century. This 6 bedroom, 2 bath home has 4 fireplaces, hardwood and wide plank floors, and features original period details, including doors, woodwork, and built in bookcases. The first floor features four spacious rooms. The living room features a fireplace, a built in hutch and a row of built-in bookcases. The large dining room features a fireplace, original chair rails, and wide plank floors. A large family room is perfect for entertaining. The spacious eat-in kitchen has a bay window for viewing sunsets and two doors leading to the wrap around porches. The second floor features four bedrooms, two baths and a walk-in hall closet. The back bedroom, originally a servant's quarters, can be accessed from the back kitchen stairs. The third floor features a large sitting room with built in bookcases. One either side are two more large bedrooms which can be used as fifth or six bedrooms or made into office space or a second den. The full basement has concrete floors, a laundry room, and a back room ready to be converted into your personal wine cellar. Oermead?s wonderful heritage began as a simple stone farmhouse built by John Newbrough in 1732. The dining room and den were added in 1792, and the kitchen was added in 1915. One family, the Howells and Brintons, lived in the home from 1868 to 1961. It was during this time that Deborah and Frances Brinton worked with other community leaders to found Chester County Day. The iconic drawing of Oermead graces the yearly Chester County Day program and is featured on the cover of Bernice Ball's book, Forty Years of Days. The name Oermead derives from the Brintons, who were known to enjoy watching the sunset ?over the meadow? or Oermead. New porch railings were installed in 2020, a new roof was installed in 2018 and the outside of the house was painted in 2017. Situated off Strasburg Road, on a quiet cul de sac with only four other homes, Oermead is centrally located within a mile to West Chester. The Brandywine Creek and hiking trails of Stroud Preserve and Harmony Hill Nature area are also close by.
