The Schoppert-Cotton House was built in Eutaw, Alabama, in 1856 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was purchased by the Greene County Historical Society in order to save it from demolition about 6 years ago. The society has painstakingly restored the exterior by doing the following: removing additions which were tacked onto the house, replacing rotten sills, joists and boards, and scraping and painting the exterior.The front porch was totally rebuilt as it was not safe; it had also been modified so that it did not match the period of the house. All windows were reglazed and broken glass was replaced. A chimney which had fallen was totally rebuilt from original bricks, as were two fireplaces within the house. Original doors, wainscoting, baseboards and trim remain, along with heart pine floors throughout all but one room. Original colored glass surrounds the double entrance doors. However, the entrance doors were replaced around 1900 with more elaborate Victorian doors. Two original mantels remain upstairs. The old wallboard has been removed and new electric wiring has been put in downstairs and the walls have been insulated. Ductwork for heat and air has been installed. The Historical Society has done all of the difficult work on the house and now it is ready for its next owner to decide where the kitchen and bathrooms shall be placed. Plumbing will need to be added and electricity taken to the the upper level. The original kitchen remains outside behind the house. It could be restored and attached to the house to become a Master suite or the kitchen and pantry could be contained in it along with a 1/2 bath. The asking price of $85,000 covers the purchase price and cost of materials and hired labor for construction incurred by The Greene County Historical Society over the 6 years of its ownership. Many volunteer hours by members were given to this project, and the society is not attempting to make a profit.
