4146 Flora Place is a charming three-story brick house built just after the turn of the 20th century and a few years after the 1904 Saint Louis World's Fair. Though it is 115 years old, I am only its second owner, and I have lived here for 34 years. It sits on Flora Place, the major east-west boulevard which anchors the Shaw Neighborhood, includes a large central parkway, and extends one mile east of the Missouri Botanical Garden. The house retains its original hardwood floors, stairs, banisters, and baseboards, all in an early 20th century Arts and Crafts style. There are four original stained-glass windows, three fireplaces, and any additions made to the house have been respectful of and reflective of its original architecture. Central air was added in the early 1990s, and the two units (one for the ground floor, one for the upper floors) were replaced about 2013. A sunroom, which continues from the kitchen, was added in 2012, and has its own HVAC unit. This is adjacent to a redwood deck which connects to the backyard through a ramp descending from the deck. In 2022, a two-car garage was built behind the house opening on to the alley. The ramp from the deck was then continued as a concrete path which arcs down to the alley and allows for full access to the house regardless of mobility. The house is a wonderful place to live and entertain in a beautiful city neighborhood.
