    What's special

Perhaps once in a generation does a home with such a rich history become available to the general public. Only a few antebellum homes exist in the Jackson Metro Area. Now here's your chance to own one of them. Named Hiawatha, this home is on the National Register of Historic Places. If a house could talk, Hiawatha would speak volumes. Generals, politicians, celebrities, and landed gentry socialized and dined in its halls. Constructed before the Civil War, Hiawatha featured prominently in the Battle of Champion's Hill, a critical prelude to the Vicksburg siege, the final stake in the demise of the Confederacy. It served as a hospital for the wounded. Over 150 years later, a contemporary celebrity became the proud, new owner: Hinds County Judge, Bobby Delaughter. He reportedly spent a king's ransom on bringing Hiawatha back to its resplendent antebellum magnificence. As an assistant district attorney, Mr. Delaughter successfully prosecuted Byron De La Beckwith, the assassin of civil rights leader, Medgar Evers, after whom Jackson's airport is named. Mr. Delaughter's world-wide heralded achievement was reenacted in the Rob Reiner movie, Ghosts of Mississippi. Alec Baldwin played Mr. Delaughter's protagonist. James Woods won a supporting actor Oscar for his menacing portrayal of De La Beckwith. Mr. Delaughter's subsequent trials and tribulations is aptly retold in the Fall of the House of Zeus, which the Wall Street Journal says "Reads like a John Grisham novel, an epic tale of backbiting, shady deal-making and greed - Masterful. Constructed in a Dog-Trot style and updated with modern amenities and construction materials, Hiawatha has almost 3,000 feet of grandeur. With soaring ceilings, Hiawatha has 4 bedrooms, one of which has built-in book shelves with an attached rolling ladder to reach items at the very top. It has 3 bathrooms, one of which is graced by a claw-foot bathtub. Heart of pine floors and three separate HVAC systems provide the finishing touches throughout. On almost 1 acre of sprawling grounds sits a second house complete with plumbing which can be used as a guest house or provide income as a rental. A 2 car carport and large air conditioned garage complete this serene and pastoral estate. In 2010 Mr. Delaughter took a financial beating when he put Hiawatha up for sale for a mere $500,000. Hurry! At $349,900, this historical icon won't be on the market long. For more historical information on Hiawatha visit battleofchampionhill history series 4 and newyorktimes garden, 02-01-2007.
