"Dr. William Brownell came to Utica to practice medicine in 1852. He was a typical country practitioner of the period - robust of body, with a rugged exterior and somewhat taciturn. He was considered an honest, conscientious, charitable, patriotic citizen - a physician devoted to his calling. He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1852 and married Jane Scudder in 1856. They had three children: Lizzie, William Jr. and Kate. He served as postmaster at Utica from 1854-1856, served in the state legislature in 1856 and was re-elected to 1860. He took a great interest in educational matters and served 16 years on the school board, 10 years as president. He enlisted as surgeon of the Second Michigan Cavalry in 1861 and served three years. He built a brick home, which still stands on the northwest corner of Cass and Hahn." -Excerpt from the "Utica History Book" available for sale at the City Clerk. There are three units here and one of them recently became available after 20 years occupancy! This community we believes in being respectful, courteous and polite neighbors. We feel it takes everyone's part to make a space feel like home. We also believe this house is truly a piece of history that must be preserved. We do this by bringing each other's trash cans in (for example) and generally have each other's backs. I invite my tenants over if I have an event planned! We also take care of the property as it's almost 200 years old and beautifully built and maintained. If you believe in being a good neighbor, the unit available is truly unique.
