The Gattman Residence, 1959. Cliff Burlew, Architect. While Burlew's contributions to the built environment may have gone largely unacknowledged, his work, however, is no less important than his modern master contemporaries. Burlew's site specific design of the Gattman Residence offers a dual narrative: a more formal, street facing facade and a relaxed, laissez faire southern-facing rear side of the house. Both of these narratives work together which, coupled with the verdant landscape, pool, and deep setback from the street, provide a respite from the outside world. Extant original character defining features are found inside and out of the house. Articulated dentil molding on the fascia board wraps the perimeter of the house, carport, and garage. Mosaic tiles and rich-hued walnut panels in the foyer, colorful resin windows flanking the fireplace hearth, and a raised formal dining room are reminiscent of neo-classicism and revivalist architecture of the recent past.
