    What's special

This magnificent property, known as the Hambley-Wallace House, has been in the loving care of the Leo Wallace family for the past eighty-one years. It has been a landmark in Rowan County since the beginning of it's construction in 1901, and is recognized as one of the true "jewels" of the city. Set apart by its scale and large lot, this mansion is among the most ambitious of its era in the Piedmont of North Carolina. It is an unusually handsome and lavishly detailed Chateauesque style mansion in a suburban estate-like setting on grounds that are enclosed by a low granite wall. The house stands stately, but unpretentiously, in a neighborhood of stylish, substantial brick, frame, and stone houses from the 1810's to the 1930's. The home was designed by Charlotte architect Charles Hook and constructed by the Lazenby Brothers Construction Company. The landscaping was designed by Thomas Meehan & Sons, of Philadelphia. The house survives today in a truly remarkable, high state of preservation which reflects the very intelligent, unstinting stewardship of the Wallace Family for who it has been a family home for eight-one years. The house is listed on the Register of the National Trust for Historic Places and is a Pivotal structure in the West Square Historic District of Salisbury. The house is covered by a tall hipped slate roof, the three storied house stands on a raised basement. The first story is finished in ashlar granite while the second-story facade and all remaining elevations are sheathed in a beautiful pumpkin-colored brick set in tinted mortar. These brick elevations are enlived with slight offsets & the use of granite quoins and belt courses which both enfol
