Designed by A. Quincy Jones & Frederick Emmons in 1964, this Eichler is a true mid-century modern time capsule. Over 4 years was spent restoring this house, removing flooring, carpet, paint etc. that wasn't true to the original intent. A custom cabinet maker was brought in to rebuild all of the kitchen cabinets using the existing original cabinets as templates. Planks of raw redwood were used to create all new cabinet fronts and drawers. All appliances are stainless steel and top of the line such as SubZero fridge and a Bosch dishwasher. A Jenn-Air gas cooktop with downdraft venting was installed in order to avoid an overhead vent hood that would encroach on the living space. The exhaust is vented unobtrusively to the outside. The very rare and useful pivoting and extending dining table was maintained in the kitchen as well as was the original white-wash stained redwood ceilings throughout. The ceilings of most Eichlers have been painted white over the years. Additional glass was added above the kitchen countertops and clerestory windows were added between the dining room and family room in order to increase light transmission and improve sight-lines. The floors throughout are linoleum tiles that were chosen to match a few pieces of original tile that were found under carpet in a bedroom closet. A solid exterior wall was removed from the dining room and additional panes of floor to ceiling glass were added to increase light transmission and enhance the view out to the pool. The detailing around the new windows matches the original window detailing. The integration is seamless. An engineer was employed to create plans that would make certain the wall could withstand earthquakes. The HVAC system is dual-zoned. The master bedroom, bath and office/craft room are controlled separately from the kitchen and 3 other bedrooms and bathroom in order to reduce heating and cooling costs. The pool is a diving pool with an 8' deep diving section. The backyard is very private with views towards the hills.
