History: Originally the "Johnson Place" was entered in Colonial Indiana Territory in the year 1810 by Col. John Johnson and his wife Nancy Wilson. Her Col. Johnson erected the first mill farmed home in Pike County in 1817. Col. Johnson had sistinguished himself as a soldier in the Battle of Tippecanoe. He was Territorial Secretary to William Henry Harrison, who was Governor of Indiana Territory at Vincennes. Johnson was also a member of the first State Legislature at Corydon. The new Johnson home, Luxuriously furnished, and with a library, was considered a mansion for a frontier home. The Johnsons had five sons and one daughter Eleanor, who married businessman Matthew Foster. Their third child, John Watson Foster,graduated from Harvard School of Law, was a colonel in the Civil War and was appointed Secretary of State by his friend, President Benjamin Harrison. Foster later served as ambassador to China. His grandson, John Foster Dulles served as Secretary of State under President Dwight Eisenhower.
