Neighborhood Description This tract was barren and undesirable when Ben Haggott co-developed it with Roy Dolley in the 1940’s. They had an unused corporation named “Seaside Ranchos”. Although this tract isn’t on the sea shore they decided to use the name anyway. The 209 acres only cost $212 per acre then! Half of the Seaside Ranchos tract (west of Linda Drive) was built by Ben in 1947. They originally sold for $11,500! Getting people to move to this part of Torrance was a hard sell back then. In fact, to spur sales in the beginning, the developers offered a FREE down payment. THE LIGHTS: The tradition started around 1984 on Reese Road. Renee Bowden was the first one to put lights in the trees in this area. Bob and Diane Solomon, and neighbor of Renee's on Reese Road, had the idea to do the whole street and make it look uniform. They suggested a Christmas block party and everyone put up lights. Now, the tradition is widespread and last for about 6 weeks. Neighbors start putting up lights and decorations the weekend after Thanksgiving and take them down soon after New Year’s Day. Although a vast majority of the residents decorate, it’s a voluntary thing to do.
