PORT CHARLOTTE: If you've never taken a boat ride on Charlotte County's beautiful Peace River (renowned as one of the most beautiful, pristine, tropical rivers in the country) you are missing a rare treat (boat rentals, air boat rides, boat ramps, fishing and sightseeing charters are readily available). The river and Harbor have many outdoor Tiki Bars and restaurants along the way and is definitely an angler's paradise. The Charlotte Cultural Center with library, plus the Charlotte County sports Stadium and Sports Park, are also nearby within minutes.
In the town of Port Charlotte there are many restaurants and nightlife with bars and lounges, shopping malls, and a variety of churches and beaches within minutes. The Charlotte County stadium has many events going on including big name ball teams and name entertainers performing. There are many festivals that frequently go on in the area. Even if you don't fish, the piers are fun to visit to see the fishing action at night or in the daytime. If you wish to see another historic part of old florida, you can visit the Navigator Lounge in nearby Desoto County by car or by boat, it is on the water, and serves food and drinks. Venice is an Island with 3 bridges to get on and has a beautiful beach right on the Gulf of America where you can pick up prehistoric shark's teeth (one of 3 places in the world) and get some great sun. The town itself is a pleasure to visit with all of its great shops, restaurants and bars along Venice Avenue. Be sure to visit the Crow's Nest restaurant on the Island for great food and drinks, a great view of the Inland waterway and the parked boats at their Marina. After that, go another block further to the Venice Jetty's to watch the boat's come in and witness the great fishing on the Jetty Wall, there you can watch the Pelicans try to steal something to eat from the fishermen and women. For boaters, there are 2 boat launches to see the beauty of Venice, by water. If you have a small plane, there is an airport here for you to land. For shoppers, there is a great Wal-Mart store and a shopping mall across the street.
NORTH PORT: Used to be called North Port Charlotte for obvious reasons, it is on the northwestern border of Port Charlotte but is located in Sarasota County rather than Charlotte. North Port is unique in that it boasts beautiful new housing, great new shopping plazas with a Wal-Mart and Home Depot as well as the beautiful Coco Plum Plaza shopping center. You can play golf or visit the great Farmers Market located at the city center. Also, located in North Port is the Myakka River where the old "Tarzan" movies were made. In 1985 the Florida Legislature designated 34 miles of this river in nearby Sarasota County a "Wild and Scenic River", it is amazingly beautiful and boat tours can be obtained from the rustic "Snook Haven" restaurant and bar, alongside the river. You will see wild birds, alligators, fish and dolphins on these tours. Costs are minimal.
If you have a boat, want to fish or sightsee, there is a great city boat launch on Myakkahatchee Creek, off Kenwood Drive, which runs into the Myakka River with plenty of free parking, check out all the exciting tributaries. North Port has many veterans' organizations including the VFW, Amvets 2000, Amvets 312, and the American Legion, most serve food and all serve drinks. If you want a real dining treat with atmosphere, try the Anna Maria Oyster Bar restaurant which is one of the best seafood places to eat in the entire area and has a full bar.
